Women and Sexuality

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

I found this very disturbing article after visiting Sir Tiger's blog and coming across one of his posts regarding the same article. The article talks about The History Of Love: how it has been portrayed and exemplified over time since pagan times. What's interesting about it is how women's status have evolved over time, and how the perception of sex has changed with the entry of Christianity. Anyway, here are some of the most interesting eureka moments I've had with the article:

  • High class prostitutes and courtesans were held superior to wives and "virtuous" women. (During the Golden Age of Greece)
  • Pagan love in Rome was guilt-free, lusty, unfaithful and deceitful. (Roman Empire - 27 BC - 385 AD)
  • Abortions and contraception were common. Babies were often discarded as garbage. (Roman Empire - 27 BC - 385 AD) <-- OMFG!
  • The Catholics argued that women did not have a mortal soul and debated if women were even human. (Rise of Christianity and the Dark Ages - 385 AD - 1000 AD) <--- What the hell!?
  • Christian marital sex was performed only in one position and never during penance nor on Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays, holiday seasons, and then only to conceive a child. (Rise of Christianity and the Dark Ages - 385 AD - 1000 AD)
Well anyway, I don't know if there's any truth to the article. But if you read the article, it's just crazy to think people were like that during ancient times. Haha, all for the sake of religion... or is it faith? Ah, what the heck.
